Excellent sports watch, superb app, and a great price
I've been using a garmin for cycling for years, but since my wife took up running I have been envious of her garmin watch for the extra data it provides. This Garmin sports watch appeared as a Black Friday deal, and as I'm someone that used to do triathlon it looked ideal. It's packed with features, is fully waterproof for swimming (though note that the hrm doesn't work when in water), can be set up for triathlons to include transitions, and the hrm is generally very accurate. I've done the odd session when it's been inaccurate (probably due to the sensor being wet), but in the main it works well. It syncs to my mobile via the Connect App at the end of every work out provided bluetooth is on (which invariably it is) and then on to Strava. There are all kinds of configuration settings, it's a very powerful device. The GPS finds satellites faster than my old garmin and is very accurate too. And give it permission via the app and it will also display email notifications, texts, call info, etc, all very useful. I don't use the sleep feature as plug it in for charging every night via the provided cable, but without charging it lasts two or three days before the battery runs down. There is a minor downside, which is when using it for gym workouts. It can be set to indoor running and cycling, but not other options. I spend a lot of time on the gym rower and arm bike, but have to use the indoor cycling option, which doesn't record distance, so that has to be added manually. Only a minor thing, but with a watch this powerful it would be a useful feature, perhaps worthy of a firmware update?Stunning price at £150 on a Black Friday deal, and worth every penny.

Having read some pretty scathing reviews (after I’d bought this watch based on a recommendation from a running friend), I was initially nervous about it. I’ve left it a year before doing this review, partly because of lockdowns, and partly because of forgetting to write it.

A year on, the watch has never let me down. Garmins have some funny habits though, and you’ll want to get on to the user forum for this model, so that you can learn the difference between eccentric “features” and faults. For example, with mine, I need to power it down (simple one button procedure) before attaching it to a charger, otherwise it will have disconnected the gps while charging, and will show the time that you first plugged it in. Even that’s not the end of the world, because if you go outside to where there’s a good gps signal, it will reconnect and correct the time.

The Garmin Connect app (on my iPhone) is, in my view, essential. The Connect IQ app is also great as the source for downloadable alternative watch faces and app to give extra functionality. I added a simple stopwatch app and an electronic compass. I’ve also bought some rubber bumpers that sit neatly, snugly and unobtrusively around the watch, from Amazon. These typically last three or four months, so buy a pack containing a few. Cheap, and save the watch from knocks and potential scratches. Oh, and a stick on screen protector, too.

For serious exercise, I use Garmin’s chest strap with this. That’s not because I have accuracy issues with the wrist-based readings, but because the strap adds a load of additional features - cadence, left/right balance measurement, and much more. To me, it’s worth the extra cost.

I wear my watch 24 hours a day. I find very comfortable once you’ve experimented with how tight/loose you like your strap. Its sleep recording is less advanced than the Fitbit watch I had before, and it can occasionally give rather eccentric readings, but that’s probably because I like it fitting slightly on the loose side, and it may lose contact very occasionally while sleeping. Not a deal-breaker, though, in my book. Step recording, distance run and walked etc is, in my view, pretty accurate and consistent from day to day.

Like all these devices, the inbuilt menus take a bit of learning, but that’s worth doing, because lots of the watches features are customisable to some extent. Persevere. You’ll need to be able to attach the watch to a desktop or laptop computer occasionally, in order to download occasional firmware upgrades from Garmin.

      I’m a happy customer.

I purchased this Garmin after previously owning a Polar M400 and to say this is an upgrade is an understatement. The functionality is outstanding with the ability to customize every aspect of options the forerunner offers. Most importantly there's a wide range activities available as standard with the option to customize your own and change the activity data screens.
Another great function is the HRM on the watch, this feels accurate but I have yet to test with the purchased chest strap to see if there's much discrepancy between the two. The watch HRM helps with recovery as it can be worn whilst sleeping (something that's an inconvenience with the chest strap) to monitor the HR whilst asleep and provide you with an accurate resting HR. It will also measure and monitor you body movement whilst sleeping to assist with recovery tracking.

The watch fitting is very comfortable, with small wrists some HRMs look big and bulky, the 735XT is very sleek and proportional to the wrist. There are some other great features for hikers, such as, get my location as a grid reference, nautical distance, compass heading direction, elevation, sunset & sunrise. The GPS connects super fast, typically less than 30 secs in various locations and conditions I have tested.

Once an account is created online, software downloaded to a device (laptop, PC, tablet, smart phone etc and the 735XT synchronized to the personal account a wealth of dashboards and functionality is available to track and measure ongoing performance. Once the 735XT is linked to a smart phone, notifications can be set up to alert you of any incoming alert types you specify i.e. emails, whats app messages, Facebook messages, calendar items, even incoming phone calls.

In summary if you are serious about fitness, health and well being and are looking for a smart watch solution to measure your goals then I would seriously consider adding this to your short list. The screens are well layout and intuitive allowing full customization to suit your requirements. The 735XT feels solid in construction and sleek enough to be worn 24/7.

I agonised for a while over whether to buy the Fitbit Versa 2 or this.

The clincher in the end for me was the included chest strap as my preferred cardio exercise is rowing and I read that the optical HR sensors built into most of these activity trackers don’t work well when the muscles around the wrist are tensed.

Regardless, this combo works well for me and the app is awesome.

I must confess and say that the so-called ‘Smart Features’ of this device were switched off as soon as I worked out how. It’s an activity monitor first and foremost; the smart features are a poor to non-existent benefit to me.

One downside is that most of my friends are using Fitbit or Apple Watch for their activity tracking so there is no direct way to compare / brag / be humbled.

One alternative is to use something like my fitness pal to grab the data and compare in that, but that means another app and some more hassle but in addition, you can grab data from other sources (e.g. the Apple Health App) and aggregate it in My Fitness Pal, so you’re not entirely stuck in the Garmin ecosystem.

Only issue that I have had is with the firmware update for the device. This was maddeningly counter-intuitive and took a while to get my head around but once I figured it out, the update process was smooth.

One piece of advice is to regularly clean the chest strap with washing up liquid to maintain the accuracy.

All in all, very pleased with the device and it’s affect on my motivation and training efforts.
